Career Advice: Give And You Shall Receive

by

In these tough times more than ever, it is important to take time out and meet with folks who need career advice.

This doesn’t mean you have an opening in your company or even know where other jobs may be; it’s simply about helping friends, family, or colleagues who might need some advice. If you’ve got insight to offer those trying to break into a new job, be the one to help them learn and advance in their career.

Make the time.
It is so easy to plead “I’m too busy this week”, but don’t do it. Chances are you can most likely make time for coffee, breakfast, lunch or dinner. You do these things on an (almost) daily basis. A quick phone call or email chain might also suffice for those who are still “too busy” or BlackBerry obsessed. Helping someone who is looking for employment can be as simple as giving ideas on where to look for jobs, how to follow up from an interview, when not to write email ‘thank you’s, and other quick tips that you might appreciate in candidates that you have seen in previous hiring experiences.

College Grads Need All the Help You Can Give
Recent college graduates need help in getting interviews and appointments other ways than from perusing online job boards. It seems that college career placement offices have forgotten the importance of a personal handshake. Graduates skills in networking need a dose of the real world that you can give them.

How Does This Benefit Me?
Of course there’s something in it for you too; you can learn from the experience as well. There is so much to learn from those job searching. They have either good or bad things to say about their previous employment experiences and you can take their input and make sure to incorporate some great practices or to ensure your organization will not follow in an unfavorable path.

All in all, find some time and share your ideas. It is the right thing to do! And remember, what goes around, comes around.
